BSc Psychology Counselling

University of Strathclyde

Course overview

The BSc Hons Psychology and Counselling at the University of Strathclyde helps students understand how people think, feel, and act, plus the skills needed to support others through counselling. Students learn psychological theories and practice counselling methods. They study how the mind works, mental health, behaviour, and also how to listen and help people talk through problems.

The course combines scientific study with real-life skills. Graduates are ready to work in roles that help people heal and understand their minds. The programme takes four years to complete in Scotland, giving students time to grow their knowledge and skills. In the early years, students cover basic psychology, research methods and introduction to counselling skills. Later years include advanced topics in abnormal psychology, therapy techniques, ethics, and mental health interventions.

Students also carry out supervised placements where they help clients under guidance. A final year research project allows students to investigate a topic of interest, mixing psychology and counselling theory. Classes use lectures, workshops, seminars, and role-play sessions to teach both theory and counselling practice. Students will do group work, case studies, and real or simulated counselling sessions. Assessment includes essays, written exams, reports, presentations, and evaluation of counselling practice.
