BSc Forensic Science with Sandwich Year

University of South Wales

Course overview

The BSc Forensic Science (with Sandwich Year) at the University of South Wales is designed to provide a strong scientific understanding of forensic analysis and its role within the justice system. The course combines laboratory science with investigative practice, allowing students to understand how scientific evidence is collected, analysed, and presented in legal settings. It reflects current standards used in forensic laboratories and investigative agencies. Students study core scientific subjects such as biology, chemistry, and analytical science as they apply to forensic work. The course explores crime scene examination, evidence handling, laboratory testing, and interpretation of results.

The sandwich year allows students to gain real work experience in a professional workplace. This helps them understand how forensic science works in real cases. Students learn about professional behaviour and how cases are handled in practice. They also study how forensic science is used in courts and the legal system. This includes writing reports and giving expert evidence. By the final year, students complete advanced scientific work that demonstrates skills gained. Students are taught using lectures, lab-based practical work, case studies, group activities, and independent study. Assessment is mainly coursework-based and includes laboratory reports, written assignments, practical assessments, presentations, and project work.
