Course overview

The BSc Software Engineering degree at the University of Portsmouth teaches students how to become experts in building software. This includes everything from planning an idea to keeping the software working over time. The course allows students to focus on special areas like data science, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, computing for education, computer graphics, and ethical hacking. Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other necessary information about their education. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to show their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • To start this course in September 2025 or 2026, applicants will need 112 to 120 UCAS points. This can be achieved from having two or three A levels, or from other qualifications that are considered equal.
  • Applicants' qualifications should include a subject that is useful for the course, such as Mathematics, Computer Science, or Physics.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from a non-English speaking background need a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no part of the score below 5.5, or an equivalent accepted English language qualification.
  • If applicants do not meet these language requirements, pre-sessional English programmes are available to help them prepare.
