PhD Postgraduate Research in Law

University of East Anglia UEA

Course overview

The PhD Postgraduate Research in Law at the University of East Anglia (UEA) allows candidates to complete independent legal or socio-legal research, culminating in a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy).

Students are supported by experienced academic staff who serve as supervisors, helping them to make a significant contribution to legal scholarship in areas like international law, criminal justice, or commercial law.

This research-focused degree requires candidates to submit a detailed research proposal of no more than 2,000 words with their application. The primary assessment is the final thesis, which is defended in a viva voce examination. Full-time study is typically three years (36 months).

Entry requirements

Before applying, candidates are strongly encouraged to contact a potential supervisor within the Law School to discuss their research idea and assess the fit. A strong application requires a carefully written research proposal, alongside a personal statement and relevant academic references.

Grade Requirements:

  • Successful applicants are normally expected to have an LLM or equivalent Master's degree.

  • This Master's qualification should include a final grade of Merit (60% or above) overall, with a minimum mark of 65% achieved in the dissertation or research component.

English Proficiency:

  • Candidates need to score at least 7.0 overall in the IELTS test, with a minimum of 6.5 in any other component.

  • Other English language test scores, such as PTE Academic and TOEFL IBT tests, are accepted, amongst others.
