MSc Data Science for Biology

University of East Anglia UEA

Course overview

The MSc Data Science for Biology at UEA is a one-year postgraduate programme. It trains students in data science methods applied to biology and life-science contexts. It equips graduates for roles in bioinformatics, data analytics, and research within biological or health settings. Students will learn how to handle large biological datasets, use statistical and machine-learning tools. The final part of the degree is a substantial individual project which allows students to investigate a real-world biological or bioinformatics problem under supervision.

The programme starts with foundation modules to build skills in programming, statistics, databases, and biology data handling. After that, students move into specialist modules covering topics like genomic data analysis, computational biology, machine learning for biology, and data visualisation in life sciences.  Learning takes place through lectures, computer labs, seminars, and project work. Students practise coding, analysing biological data, interpreting results, and presenting findings. Assessment is by exams, written reports, coursework, lab work, and the major project. The project forms a large portion of the final grade and allows students to show how they can apply what they have learned
