BSc Information Technology With Foundation Year

University of Derby

Course overview

The University of Derby BSc Information Technology with Foundation Year allows students to gain a thorough understanding of how Information Technology is essential to all types of companies. Before progressing to the BSc Information Technology honours degree, students have the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge, and confidence during the foundation year. It might also be helpful if the students intend to change careers, as they will explore how data can be used to inform decisions and how IT systems are managed in business environments, supported by coursework that emphasises real-world tools and team-based projects rather than formal exams.

Students will study modules in their first year to acquire foundational knowledge, and in their second year, they will study specialised modules chosen primarily for their degree. The modules to be covered include Logic and Discrete Mathematics, Fundamentals of Network and Security, Programming, Software Engineering, and IT Product Design.

Modules are taught through a combination of debates, group and individual work, guided reading, lectures, computer lab practicals, tutorials, seminars, and presentations by instructors and guest lecturers, with assessment delivered through short exercises in computer labs to writing a dissertation for the Final Year Independent Studies project. The students also have the option of a placement year.
