BSc Genetics with a Foundation Year

Swansea University

Course overview

This four-year BSc Genetics with a Foundation Year programme is designed for students who may not hold the standard entry qualifications for a full science degree. The initial foundation year provides key scientific concepts and academic skills required for the subsequent three-year BSc in Genetics. The foundation year covers subjects such as Foundation Biological Chemistry, The Human Cell, and Introduction to Molecular Biology, to thoroughly prepare students for degree-level studies.

The degree portion provides an in-depth understanding of the fundamental building blocks of all life on Earth and their impact on scientific fields like disease, evolution, and conservation. Learning includes access to the Medical School's state-of-the-art research facilities, with practical assessments like laboratory work, written exams, and oral presentations used throughout the course. This degree is also one of Swansea's Pathways to Medicine programmes, offering a guaranteed interview for the Graduate Entry Medicine course for eligible students.

Entry requirements

The BSc Genetics with a Foundation Year is a four-year programme designed to help students who do not meet the direct entry requirements for the three-year BSc course. Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying to the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. An academic and/or employer reference is also required.

Grade Requirements:

  • The offer for the Foundation Year programme is usually set lower than for the standard three-year degree, often requiring A-Level grades of CCD (which must include Biology).
  • For those with a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma, the requirement is typically DMM, which must include a good profile in Biology.
  • Applicants with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme are generally required to achieve 24 points, including a Higher Level grade 4 in Biology.

English language Requirements:

  • Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate a minimum overall score of IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent qualification), with no less than 5.5 achieved in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
  • This ensures that all students have the necessary language skills to succeed in their studies and participate fully in the academic community.
