MSc Clinical Embryology

Course Overview

The MSc Clinical Embryology at Liverpool John Moores University is a one-year full-time master's course. It is unique in the UK because it is run together with Care Fertility, a leading fertility clinic. Students learn from both academic staff and clinical embryologists. They study in modern labs at both LJMU and Care Fertility and gain hands-on experience with IVF methods like semen checks, ICSI, embryo biopsy, and freezing. Students use high-spec labs, and in some cases, they may do their research project at the clinic, though this depends on availability and placement competition.

The course has six key modules: Embryology, Assisted Reproduction Technologies I and II, Genetics, Advanced Laboratory Skills, Research Methods, and a large Research Project. Each module combines technical theory and lab practice. Students learn through lectures, hands-on skills sessions, group discussions, and self-directed research. They are assessed in many ways, such as written exams, practical lab reports, presentations, literature reviews, research reports, portfolios, and oral defence of their research project. This mix aims to build both expertise and confidence.
