BEng Automotive Engineering

Coventry University

Course overview

The BEng Automotive Engineering with Foundation Year at Coventry University is a 4-year undergraduate course for students who want to learn how cars and vehicles are designed, built, and tested, but may not meet the direct entry requirements for the full degree. The first year (foundation year) helps students build basic knowledge in math, physics, and engineering principles.

After the foundation year, students continue to the main BEng Automotive Engineering course for the next three years. This course teaches students how engines, braking systems, suspension, and electrical parts of cars work. It also covers modern technologies like electric vehicles and hybrid systems. The course is hands-on and prepares students for jobs in the auto industry. Students can also take a placement year after Year 2 to get real work experience in the auto or engineering industry.

The course is taught through a blend of lectures, tutorials, lab sessions,  simulations, and group projects, while assessment is through coursework, group assignments, and presentations. In the final year, students are required to complete a project and choose a real engineering challenge to solve using what they’ve learnt. Some students work with real companies for this project.
