PhD Advanced Powertrain and Fuels
Course overview
The Brunel University London Advanced Powertrain and Fuels programme provides an opportunity for in-depth research into improving the efficiency and reducing emissions of engines, especially through advanced combustion processes and control systems.
Research in this area also focuses on boosting technologies and unique methods for studying fuels and engines. The programme explores novel technologies for producing biofuel from industrial waste and developing new combustion methods optimised for biofuels.
Students undertaking this PhD will engage in cutting-edge research supported by state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced camless and direct injection research engines, as well as laser and optical equipment for fuel and engine studies.
The programme encourages a blend of experimental and modelling approaches. As one of the largest and most active engine research groups in the UK, Brunel's research on internal combustion engines has a long history, with faculty recognised for their skills in creating high-efficiency, ultra-low emission powertrains. The full-time PhD typically takes three years, while a part-time option extends to six years.
Entry requirements
Candidates are required to submit a personal statement, and a relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs to show their work experience.
A detailed research statement outlining the proposed PhD topic is also a key part of the application. An interview will be part of the admissions process, conducted by at least two academic staff members. These interviews can happen online using MS Teams or Zoom, or in person.
Grade Requirements:
- Applicants are typically required to hold a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (equivalent to a 1st or 2:1), or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification.
- This degree should preferably be in a relevant engineering, science, or technology subject. For international applicants, a GPA of 3.0 or higher is generally expected.
English Proficiency:
- If English is not your primary language, you must have an IELTS overall score of 6.5, with no individual component score below 6.0.
- The university also accepts comparable scores from other approved English tests, including PTE, BrunELT, and TOEFL.
