PhD Electrical Materials Science
Course overview
The PhD in Electrical Materials Science at Bangor University is a three-year programme that students take on a full-time basis. Completing the degree successfully requires completing a large amount of independent research that the student manages themselves. The specific research areas available include studying the surface characteristics of metals and semiconductors, investigating the electronic physics of materials that conduct electricity poorly, and exploring how ultrasound technology can be used in hospitals and other medical settings.
The PhD in Electrical Materials Science at Bangor University primarily focuses on generating original research, and applicants are expected to align their work with the school's specialised expertise in microfabrication, 'lab-on-a-chip' technology, and nanotechnology coating for glass. Their final assessment is usually based on submitting a substantial thesis (a long research dissertation) and then defending this thesis during an oral examination known as a viva voce.
Entry requirements
Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and outline other relevant information regarding their studies, interests, and experiences. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required to support the application. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.
Grade Requirements:
-
Applicants need a good Honours degree (often a First or Upper Second-class) or an equivalent qualification, such as a Master's degree in a relevant scientific or engineering subject.
-
Since this is a research degree, previous research experience is considered essential for a successful application.
English Proficiency:
-
Applicants from non-English-speaking backgrounds need to score an IELTS overall score of 6.5, with no part of the test scoring less than 6.0. Equivalent Secure English Language Test (SELT) scores are also acceptable.
