BSc Biology with Foundation Year

Bangor University

Course overview

This BSc Biology (with Foundation Year) at Bangor University is a four-year course that includes an initial Foundation Year to prepare students for study at a university degree level. This entry route is especially helpful for those who may not meet the standard entry requirements for the three-year degree or need extra academic preparation.

The Foundation Year teaches students the basics in key science areas, such as Essential Biology, Essential Mathematics, and IT/Communication Skills. For the rest of their degree, they will be able to use Bangor's great facilities, including a botanic garden, a research farm, and specialised labs. Their grades will come from a mix of tests, written work, reports, and a main research project.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience. Since this course includes a Foundation Year, it has lower entry requirements than the standard three-year BSc.

Grade Requirements:

  • The Foundation Year is designed for those who may not have the grades for direct entry to the three-year degree.

  • Students will need to achieve between 48 and 104 UCAS Tariff points. Accepted qualifications include A-levels, BTEC Diplomas, and Access to HE Diplomas.

  • They also need a GCSE grade C/4 in Maths or an equivalent qualification.

English Language Requirements:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds must demonstrate English language proficiency.

  • The minimum requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall (with no score below 5.5 in any component) or submission of equivalent accepted test scores.
