If you've been researching study options in France, chances are you've heard people talking about the country's "five-year visa" for Indian graduates. It sounds impressive, but it's also one of the most misunderstood parts of studying in France.
The truth is that France offers different visas for different purposes, and people often confuse them. Knowing the difference could make your plans much easier, especially if you're hoping to stay and work after completing your degree.

APS, RECE and the Five-Year Alumni Visa Explained
Many students still use the term APS when talking about France's post-study work permit. That's because it was the name used for many years. Today, the official permit is called the RECE, which stands for Recherche d'emploi ou création d'entreprise. Simply put, it's a permit that allows graduates to stay in France while they look for work or start a business.
Although the name has changed, you'll still hear people use APS and RECE interchangeably. The five-year alumni visa is different. It's a short-stay Schengen circulation visa that allows former students to visit France for reasons such as networking, business meetings or job interviews. It isn't a work visa and doesn't allow you to take up full-time employment.
If your goal is to begin your career in France after graduation, the RECE is the permit you'll be relying on.
What Can You Do While Holding a RECE?
One of the biggest advantages of the RECE is that it gives you time to establish yourself after university. During this period, you're free to look for full-time work, take on freelance projects or even start your own business. You don't need an employer to sponsor you before you begin your job search, which gives you far more flexibility than many students expect.
You're also allowed to work part-time while searching for a permanent role. The current limit is 964 hours each year, which works out at around 20 hours a week.
Indian graduates have an additional benefit under the mobility agreement between India and France. Master's graduates can receive a 12-month RECE, with the option to renew it once. That gives eligible students up to 24 months to find suitable employment and move on to the next stage of their career.
Having two years to settle into a new job market gives you much more breathing space than trying to secure everything within a few months.
What Salary Do You Need?
If you're planning to stay in France long term, your first job will need to meet certain salary requirements. To move from a RECE to a Salarié work permit or a Talent Passport, you'll normally need a job offer paying at least 1.5 times the French minimum wage, known as the SMIC.
For 2026, that's expected to be around €2,650 to €2,734 gross per month. For graduates in engineering, technology, business and other STEM-related subjects, reaching this level is often realistic because these sectors continue to recruit skilled professionals.
Students graduating from humanities or more specialised social science programmes can still achieve it, but they may need to be more patient when looking for the right opportunity. That's why it's worth thinking about career prospects before choosing your course.
When Should You Apply?
Getting the timing right is just as important as preparing your documents. You'll need to wait until your university has officially confirmed your results before submitting your application. Provisional transcripts or unofficial results won't be accepted.
Most students apply during the final two months before their student residence permit expires. If you've already returned to India after graduating, you can usually apply within four years of completing your studies. From 1 May 2026, the application fee is €150, which is approximately ₹16,700.
One piece of advice comes up again and again. Don't wait until the final few months of your RECE before looking for work. The permit starts from the day it's issued, not from the day you begin applying for jobs. Graduates who start networking and submitting applications early often give themselves a much better chance of finding a role before their permit expires.
Which Courses Lead to Strong Employment Opportunities?
Some subjects naturally have stronger demand in the French job market. Engineering continues to perform well, particularly aerospace, automotive engineering and renewable energy. Courses in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation, Business Management and Finance also offer good employment prospects.
Programmes accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Écoles (CGE) are widely recognised by French employers, which can be an advantage when applying for graduate roles.
If you're considering humanities or specialist social science courses, there's no reason to rule them out. It simply helps to understand the employment market and salary expectations before making your final decision.
How Does France Compare With Other Countries?
Many students compare post-study work opportunities before deciding where to study, and that's perfectly understandable. Eligible Indian graduates can currently stay in France for up to 24 months under the RECE through the bilateral agreement between India and France.
Other countries offer different arrangements. Germany allows graduates to stay for 18 months after completing their studies, while Canada offers eligible graduates up to three years. Australia provides between two and four years, depending on the qualification completed.
The UK's Graduate Route currently allows eligible graduates to remain for two years, although planned policy changes mean future applicants may have a shorter period depending on when they qualify.
France also continues to strengthen its education partnership with India. The country has set a goal of welcoming 30,000 Indian students by 2030, showing its commitment to attracting more international students in the years ahead.
