MSc by Research Microbiology

University of LincolnBrayford Pool, United Kingdom

Course overview

The MSc by Research in Microbiology at the University of Lincoln is a postgraduate programme designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and research skills in the field of microbiology. This research-focused programme allows students to investigate specific areas of microbiology under the guidance of experienced academic staff.

Students will have the opportunity to contribute to addressing significant global challenges such as antibiotic resistance, ensuring clean water supplies, and maintaining food security through their research. The programme encompasses various aspects of microbiology, including medical, industrial, and environmental applications, as well as molecular, cell, and system biology, and recombinant DNA technology.

Learning in this programme is primarily driven by independent research, supported by regular meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and research direction. Assessment is based on the quality of the student's thesis and their ability to present and defend their research findings in a final oral examination (viva voce).

Students are expected to demonstrate a significant contribution to knowledge or the development of existing theories within their chosen area of research. Many students initially enrol in an MPhil programme and can apply for transfer to a PhD programme after the first year, subject to the evaluation of a written report and an oral examination.
