BSc Biochemistry with an industrial placement year

University of Sussex

Course overview

Studying BSc Biochemistry (with an industrial placement year) at Sussex will equip students with an in-depth study of chemical processes and organisms within living things. The course modules are taught by leading biochemists and chemists, and students will study life at the molecular scale, explore the chemical processes underpinning the activities of cells and organisms, discover what happens when things go wrong, leading to diseases such as cancer, and find out how biochemistry can help us develop new therapeutics.

The study at Sussex promises to be hands-on from the very first year; students will have access to well-equipped labs to carry out tests, research, and make findings that help address societal problems. They will learn to record, analyse, and interpret data from experiments. They will learn about current theories in the field, communicating complex topics and working as part of a team. Assessment methods will include examinations, coursework, practicals, and written assignments.

An Important addition to a regular BSc in Biochemistry is the industrial placement year. This gives students a whole year of practical work and earn in a company of choice - usually biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies - where they can apply to. Gaining immeasurable experience with real-life cases.
