PhD Civil and Environmental Engineering

Course Overview

The PhD Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and expertise to become a leader capable of addressing the complex challenges facing the built and natural environments.

Students in this PhD will work in a research group within the School of Engineering. They will work to create smart and clean urban areas, dealing with issues like limited space and old buildings. Research can be about anything covered by the University's four research centres or the wider research interests of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

Students will be given two supervisors who will help them during the PhD. They will meet with the student at least once every month. These supervisors are responsible for the student’s progress, job development, and personal welfare. They can also help the student prepare their work to be published and for research presentations.

As a research student, you can attend regular research seminars. This is a great place to learn about what other researchers are doing and to practice giving presentations. Students are encouraged to talk with all research staff throughout their programme. The final result is based on a written thesis and an oral examination (viva examination) with two examiners.
