MEng Chemical and Petroleum Engineering

The MEng Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Surrey is an integrated master’s degree. It builds on the BEng foundations but adds a further year of advanced study. The course aims to prepare graduates for leadership roles in energy, petrochemicals, renewable projects, and process industries.

Students engage in chemical engineering, petroleum systems, process design, sustainability, and industrial practice. In the early years, students take core modules in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, reaction engineering, process control, and materials science.

Middle years include petroleum engineering topics in oil and gas production, reservoirs, petrochemical reactions, and design project work. Surrey students work with a pilot plant facility to understand real industrial systems. In the final (master’s) year, the programme adds advanced modules, research, multidisciplinary design, sustainability, optimisation, and integration across chemical and petroleum systems. Students learn through lectures, tutorials, labs, design workshops, group projects, and software simulation. Surrey emphasises “learning by doing” using real systems in their pilot plant. Assessments include written exams, lab reports, coursework, design deliverables, project presentations, and a final research or design project.

The University of Surrey is in Guildford, England, and it evolved from earlier technical institutions into a full university in 1966. Grade Requirements:

• The typical entry requirement for this programme is AAA–AAB at A-level, with required subjects including Mathematics and Chemistry.

• International students must meet Surrey’s English language standards, which are an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no section below 5.5.

Surrey’s Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship offers a £2,000 accommodation fee waiver in the first year for UK home offer-holders in BEng / MEng programmes. Applicants must apply after receiving their offer.
