MEng Biomedical Engineering
Course overview
The MEng Biomedical Engineering at the University of Surrey is an integrated master’s degree. It builds on core engineering principles, with students studying advanced topics in medical devices, biomaterials, sensors, biomechanics, signal processing, and systems design. The course includes opportunities for professional training placements with leading organisations, giving real industrial or clinical experience.
Surrey’s biomedical engineering programme is backed by over 50 years of teaching and research in this field. In the early years, students cover fundamentals in mathematics, mechanics, electronics, biology, programming, materials, human physiology, and anatomy. As the course progresses, students study modules such as biosensors, medical imaging, control systems, implant engineering, rehabilitation engineering, signal processing, and design projects.
IET and IMechE accredit Surrey’s biomedical engineering courses. Final years include a large individual or group project, often in partnership with industry or a clinical partner. Many students also choose to take a professional training placement year to work in the biomedical industry or research labs. Surrey emphasises that placements are “award-winning” and help prepare students for real careers.
Teaching is delivered through lectures, laboratory work, workshops, tutorials, and project sessions. Students use advanced facilities including human movement labs, materials testing labs, design studios, and signal processing equipment. Assessment includes exams, coursework, lab reports, design challenges, presentations, and a capstone design or research project.
