MSc Biochemistry
Course overview
The MSc Biochemistry at the University of Kent is a one-year full-time (or two-year part-time) Master of Science (MSc) by Research degree, which allows students to conduct advanced studies in modern biochemistry. Students focus on a significant research project in areas like biophysics, structural biology, industrial biotechnology, or infectious diseases. This research is carried out within a school approved for having 100% of its biological sciences research rated as world-leading or globally excellent for impact.
In place of attending normal lectures, the course uses an interactive learning method based in a research laboratory, which involves seminars, workshops, and lab meetings. Their progress is closely followed and monitored by a dedicated supervisory team. The programme aims to get graduates ready for professional careers in industrial research, clinical trials, or academic progression to a PhD.
Entry requirements
Candidates are to secure a research project and a supervisor before they submit an application. They should contact the academic supervisor they wish to work with to outline their research interests, supply a CV, and detail how they will fund their studies. Acceptance is ultimately at the supervisor's discretion upon a successful interview.
Grade Requirements:
-
Applicants must have at least a 2:2 Honours degree (Second Class, Lower Division) or above in a relevant biological science-related subject. They are considered on an individual basis, and additional academic qualifications or professional experience may also be considered during the application review process.
English Language Requirements:
-
Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must demonstrate a suitable level of English, which equals a B2 level on the CEFR, meaning that they must achieve a minimum score of 6.0 overall in the IELTS test, with a minimum of 5.5 in each of the four components. Equivalent qualifications, like a degree from a UK university or a Pearson PTE Academic score of 63 (with 59 in each subtest), are also accepted.
