MPharm Pharmacy with Preparatory Year
Course overview
The MPharm Pharmacy with Preparatory Year at the University of Kent is an integrated five‑year undergraduate programme delivered at the Medway School of Pharmacy. This course begins with a preparatory (foundation) year, designed to support students who may not yet meet the standard entry requirements for a four‑year MPharm. In this first year, students build essential knowledge in chemistry, human biology, pharmacy science, and academic research, while developing the academic and employability skills needed for higher education. Once the preparatory year is completed, students transition into the first year of the MPharm degree.
This programme is (stage 1) accredited from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) for the first part of the programme. The course combines rigorous scientific teaching with practical pharmacy training so that graduates are well prepared for professional practice in community, hospital, or industrial settings. The curriculum is built on three interlinked themes, which are the science of medicines, professional practice and prescribing, and biomedical science and therapeutics. Externally supervised placements occur throughout the degree, offering real-world experience in both community and hospital pharmacies. Learning methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory work, and simulation-based learning using standardised patients. Assessment is varied and comprehensive. It includes written examinations, practical laboratory assessments, coursework, patient safety competence tasks, portfolio work, and oral presentations.
