LLM Legal Practice
Course overview
The LLM Legal Practice at the University of Hertfordshire is a professional course designed to prepare students for a career as a solicitor. The programme allows individuals to choose from a range of optional subjects to suit their professional aspirations, whether they seek a one-year course or a pathway that includes a placement year. Students benefit from the Hertfordshire Law School's strong relationships with London and regional law firms, attending various employer workshops and networking events.
The course uses real-life business situations and practical tasks to build the key skills they need for careers in business, private companies, or universities. Students get hands-on experience working in the prize-winning pro-bono Law Clinic (giving free legal help). Students can also take part in mooting (mock trials) inside a complete copy of a Crown Court. Students' final grades are based on realistic tests that are just like real legal tasks, making sure they are completely ready for professional work.
Entry requirements
Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students can choose to upload their CV with their application to show their work history. This whole process is set up to check if they are a good fit for the course and if they are dedicated to working in law.
Grade Requirements:
-
Applicants need at least a second-class undergraduate degree in Law, known as a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD), or a different degree combined with the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) qualification.
-
Applicants with a lower second-class degree may be considered if they achieved a high grade average in the foundation legal subjects.
English Language Requirements:
-
Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds must score 6.0 overall in the IELTS (with a minimum of 5.5 in each section) or submit an equivalent English language test score.
-
International students can satisfy the requirement with a GCSE grade 4 or above (or grade C under the old grading structure).
