PhD Sport and Exercise Science

University of EssexColchester Campus, United Kingdom

Course overview

This PhD is a full-time, three to four-year research qualification in Sport and Exercise Science, situated within the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences at the Colchester Campus. Students have the opportunity to collaborate closely with academic staff from a highly regarded research team on their main project.

This course provides students with excellent access to up-to-date facilities and specialist equipment. These tools allow us to measure advanced things like how people move, how their bodies work inside, and brain activity. For example, we use equipment such as isokinetic dynamometers (to assess muscle strength) and near-infrared spectroscopy (to study body and brain function).

This PhD program focuses entirely on turning students into independent researchers capable of generating entirely new and original knowledge, rather than having them take separate required course modules. Students start by enrolling in an MPhil/PhD program and must officially switch to PhD status only after demonstrating good progress in their studies. To finish, students must submit a thesis of no more than 80,000 words. Your progress is formally checked and reviewed at two meetings with your supervisors every school year.
