PhD Mechanical Engineering

University of Dundee

Course overview

The PhD Mechanical Engineering at the University of Dundee offers research in interesting areas, sometimes combined with Mechatronics. Research is split into four main groups: Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Innovative Engineering Design, and Surface Engineering and Tribology. The teachers are experts who provide great support for both teaching and sharing knowledge with the industry.

Students will work on projects that deal with difficult engineering problems. This might include creating computer models of how materials in offshore wind turbines break, or making medical devices for specific patients. Successful students will do original research with close support from their supervisors. Students can choose to apply for a project that is already advertised, or they can suggest their own research idea after talking to a staff member.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

  • Applicants should have an honours degree at a UK Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1) level or higher.
  • A Master's degree (MSc) in a relevant engineering discipline is also acceptable. If their previous degree did not include sufficient research skills, students may be able to apply for the Structured PhD. This option provides extra training in research methods.
