University of Dundee

Course overview

This Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law is a full-time research degree, lasting 3 to 4 years (36, 42, or 48 months). The specific duration of the programme depends on students' previous research experience and how advanced their research idea (proposal) is. Topics for the research cover various legal areas, like corporate law, environmental law, human rights, and criminal justice.

The final assessment for this degree is a major written thesis (a large piece of new, self-originated research). The university has three choices: a 3-year route for those with lots of research training and a firm plan; a 3.5-year choice for those in need of more research training; and a 4-year choice for students switching subjects or needing more time developing their research plan.

Entry requirements

Candidates must submit a personal statement that clearly outlines their motivation for the course. They must also present a detailed research proposal (maximum 3,000 words), which includes a preliminary research question, hypothesis, methodology, and how the whole project improves the existing knowledge. A relevant academic or employer reference is also needed.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants must hold an honours degree at a 2:1 level or higher, or a Master's degree in a related discipline. The research proposal and professional experience are assessed together with academic qualifications to determine the suitable PhD pathway (3, 3.5, or 4 years).
