BSc Nursing Adult with Foundation Year

University of Derby

Course overview

The BSc Nursing (Adult) with Foundation Year at the University of Derby is a four-year programme. The first year is a foundation year to help students build their academic and study skills before entering the nursing degree. From year two onward, students follow the adult nursing curriculum. The course teaches how to care for adults in hospitals, community settings and clinics. Students learn anatomy, physiology, clinical skills, mental health, ethics and caring practices. On graduation, students will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). As a foundation plus degree route, this course is ideal for students who do not meet direct entry requirements.

During the nursing years, students attend lectures, labs and clinical placements in health settings. They experience placements in hospitals, community care and mental health settings. The programme is accredited by the NMC, so graduates can practice as registered adult nurses. Learning methods include lectures, seminars, simulation labs, practical skills sessions and on-the-job learning. Assessment may include written exams, essays, case studies, practical assessments, placement reports and reflective portfolios.
