BEng Motorsports Engineering with Foundation Year

University of Lancashire

Course overview

The BEng Motorsports Engineering (with Foundation Year) at the University of  Lancashire is a four-year degree that begins with a foundation year for students who do not yet meet direct entry criteria. After the foundation year, students enter the honours programme in motorsport engineering. The course covers vehicle dynamics, engine systems, aerodynamics, materials, control systems, and race car design. Students also work on real motorsport projects, producing design solutions and building components. The course is built to prepare graduates for engineering roles in racing, automotive and related fields.

The programme is delivered full-time at ULan’s Preston campus. The foundation year includes modules on the basics of IT and Foundation Mathematics. After the foundation year, students move into the motorsports engineering curriculum and complete honours years with project work and specialist modules. The course includes options for placements and involvement with motorsport clubs and live projects.

Students learn through lectures, workshops, labs, tutorials and project work. They use design software, prototype parts, test systems, and work on racecar components. Assessments include written exams, lab reports, design assignments, programming tasks, presentations and the final project. Some modules require teamwork and live design challenges. Feedback is given regularly to support improvement and professional skill building.
