MSci Medical Sciences and Population Health

Swansea University

Course overview

The MSci Medical Sciences and Population Health at Swansea University is an advanced undergraduate degree that blends medical science, public health, and population health studies. The course gives students a broad grounding in biology, epidemiology, demography, health systems, health informatics, and the social factors affecting health. Students learn how to analyse differences in health across populations, and then design or test health interventions. The final year includes a major research project at master’s level, giving students a chance to explore a topic in depth and make original contributions.

The programme builds from foundational science and health modules to more specialised study. In the early years, students cover human biology, cell physiology, public health, medical psychology, and health informatics. Later years introduce advanced modules such as global health, epidemiology, and human biology. The MSci version includes an extra research year beyond the regular BSc track. Students benefit from the Medical School’s facilities and from the university’s networks with health organisations. Teaching is by lectures, seminars, lab practicals, workshops, and group tasks. Assessment includes written exams, essays, lab reports, presentations, project reports, and the dissertation.
