MEng Materials Science and Engineering

Swansea University

Course overview

The MEng Materials Science and Engineering at Swansea University equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand, design, and improve materials used in all types of engineering applications. The course combines scientific principles with practical engineering skills, teaching how materials behave, how they are tested, and how they are selected for use in products and systems. Learning is delivered through lectures, laboratory work, design projects, and case studies based on real industry problems.

Over the four years, students connect theory with practice and, in the later stages, complete a major research or design project. This encourages independent thinking and the ability to apply engineering principles to real-world situations. Students are taught through lectures, practical lab sessions, design studies, and project-based work. Assessment methods include written coursework, lab reports, design assignments, class tests, oral presentations, and final exams.
