Course overview
BEng Mechanical Engineering with Foundation at Solent University, Southampton is a 4-year programme that starts with a foundation year, which builds students’ core maths, science and engineering skills before moving into the full BEng degree. Knowledge of mechanics, design, CAD, materials, automation, and systems is built by combining theory with hands-on projects and workshops.
Students engage in guided, collaborative, and directed learning and are assessed through written exams, coursework, log books, group and individual presentations, and in-class tests. They get to work on live briefs and have access to modern engineering labs and software such as 3D printers, SolidWorks, control systems, and more.
The foundation year helps students who lack direct entry credentials to succeed in the full degree by teaching core modules like Science and Engineering Foundation skills, Fundamental Mathematics for Science and Engineering, STEM Concepts and Processes. This course is accredited by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and allows flexible and part-time study.
