Overview
The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and Design (Top-up) is a one-year, full-time undergraduate programme for students who have completed an HND in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent Higher Education qualification in a relevant area. This programme focuses on developing technical and applicable skills, particularly in manufacturing, while also building essential industry skills in teamwork, leadership, and effective communication for the modern engineering workplace.
The programme is newly accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, meeting the requirements for Incorporated Engineer registration. It includes advanced modules such as Manufacturing Systems and Thermofluids, as well as a significant individual project. Students benefit from exceptional facilities, including virtual engineering labs and 3D printing, to support practical learning and innovation.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have completed an HND in Mechanical Engineering with at least 60 credits at Merit in second-year modules or hold an equivalent Higher Education qualification in a relevant field. Each application is reviewed by the course director to confirm eligibility. Candidates are also required to provide a personal statement, academic or employer reference, and may include a CV to showcase relevant experience.
Grade Requirements:
- HND in Mechanical Engineering with at least 60 credits at Merit in second-year modules, or
- An equivalent Higher Education qualification in a directly relevant subject.
English Proficiency:
- IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5.
- TOEFL: paper-based 550, internet-based 80.
- Cambridge Proficiency or Advanced Grade C also accepted.
Cost of Study
For the 2025/26 academic year, the tuition fee for the BEng Mechanical Engineering and Design (Top-up) course is £15,500.
