BEng Structural Engineering

Course Overview

The BEng (Hons) Structural Engineering at Heriot-Watt University is a four-year degree that helps you understand how buildings, bridges, and other structures are designed and built. The course gives you a strong base in civil engineering and lets you focus on structural engineering, which is about making sure structures are safe and work well.

In your first years, you will learn how different materials behave and how to analyse simple structures. Later in the course, you will use this knowledge to work on real-life design and project tasks. You will also learn how to manage engineering work and prepare for a professional career. The course is made to help you move towards becoming a Chartered Engineer, which is an important step for working in the engineering industry.

About University

Heriot‑Watt is a public research university in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the world’s first mechanics’ institute and became a university in 1966. 

It has campuses in Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, Orkney, Dubai, and Malaysia. The campus in Edinburgh is set on 380 acres of parkland. It includes teaching buildings, a student village, a sports centre, libraries, and a conference centre. It also hosts the National Robotarium, a facility which is Europe’s leading centre for robotics and AI research.

Entry Requirements for Pakistani Students

Grade Requirements: 

Applicants need one of the following qualifications to study this course:

  • A-Levels: Grades BBC to ABB. Maths must be included and achieved at grade B.
  • International Baccalaureate: 30 points overall. Maths must be included and achieved at Higher Level with a minimum score of 5.
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: Grade DMM. The qualification must be in a relevant engineering subject and include sufficient Mathematics content.
  • HNC (Higher National Certificate): Grade B in the graded unit. The HNC must be in a relevant engineering subject and include sufficient Mathematics at SCQF Level 6.

English Proficiency:

  • International students have to demonstrate proficiency in English by having an IELTS overall score of 6.0 (or equivalent) with at least 5.5 in each of the four components.
  • If you do not meet this requirement, the university offers several English language courses. 

Cost of Study

The tuition fee to study BEng in Structural Engineering at Heriot-Watt University is £25,008. Please note that the fee quoted is for only one session. Therefore, subsequent fees are subject to change.

Scholarships

Heriot-Watt University gives different scholarships and financial help to support international students. One important option is the International Merit Scholarship. This scholarship offers a total of £500,000 to help international students who will begin their studies in January or September 2025. The money is usually given as a discount on tuition fees for the first year of the course.
