BSc Food Science

Course Overview

The BSc (Hons) Food Science programme at Glasgow Caledonian University gives students skills and experiences in many aspects of food, including analysis, biotechnology, nutrition, public health, microbiology, and food toxicology. 

This course is the first in Scotland to be accredited by the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST), joining academics with practical skills and industrial work experience to prepare students for the food industry.

These four-year degrees learning and teaching methods, with assessments, are different and include examinations, class tests, essays, management reports, case studies, presentations, and group work. An important feature is that all graduates take a full academic term (trimester) in industry on a workplace placement, giving them valuable practical experience. For example, opportunities to study abroad, in Amsterdam, to develop food concepts.

Entry Requirements for Pakistani Students

Applicants are required to submit a personal statement, academic or employer reference, and a detailed research proposal, with an optional CV, to show their suitability for the course.

Grade Requirements: 

  • Applicants need a UCAS score of 102. (A-levels at BCC grade or Scottish Highers at BBBC, which must include two science subjects).
  • A minimum entry requirement of a 90 UCAS Tariff is accepted (such as A-levels at CCC or Scottish Highers at BCCC, also including two science subjects).

English Proficiency: 

  • Applicants need an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no individual component below 5.5.
  • TOEFL iBT with a score of 78. 
  • The  Oxford Test of English (OTE) with a score of 121.
  • A Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of.

Cost of Study

The tuition fee for the BSc Food Science programme for the 2025/2026 academic session is £15,200 per year.

Scholarships

Glasgow Caledonian University offers various scholarships for international undergraduate students. The "New to GCU Undergraduate Scholarship" provides eligible international students studying a full-time on-campus course in Glasgow a tuition fee discount of up to £2,500 for each academic year, potentially totalling up to £10,000 over four years. This scholarship is automatically applied. Additionally, a 5% early payment discount may be available for fee-paying students who meet the specified early payment deadline.
