Course Overview

The BSc Computer Science with Foundation Year at Canterbury Christ Church University is a good choice if you want to start with the basics of computing before beginning your full degree. The foundation year helps you feel more confident and prepares you with the skills needed for a career in technology.

During the course, you will study key subjects such as Web development, Artificial Intelligence (AI); Software development using Agile methods, and User Experience (UX) design

The course uses a teaching method called CDIO – this means Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate. It was developed by MIT and is used by many companies around the world. It helps you learn by doing real-life, practical activities, similar to what you would do in a job.

From the start, you’ll benefit from our specialist facilities in the Verena Holmes building, where you’ll work with industry-standard tools on real projects. You may also get the chance to collaborate with businesses outside the University, gaining practical experience and insight into the workplace.

About University

Founded in 1962 originally as a teacher training college, Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) became a university in 2005. It has campuses in both Canterbury and Medway.

CCCU is organised into three faculties: Arts, Humanities & Education; Medicine, Health & Social Care; and Science, Engineering & Social Sciences. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, the university significantly increased its ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ research output.

It was also awarded Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework (2017 & 2023), meaning it delivers high-quality teaching and student outcomes.

Entry Requirements

Grade Requirements:

  • To study this course, you need to have at least UCAS Tariff points of 64 through qualifications such as A-Levels at DDE, BTEC at MPP, and International Baccalaureate at TBC. 

English Proficiency:

  • International applicants whose first language is not English are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the language. 
  • To do this, applicants must have an IELTS score of 6.0 with at least 5.5 in each of the four elements. 
  • If you do not meet this requirement, you may register for the university’s pre-sessional course in Academic English skills.

Cost of Study

For the 2025/26 academic year, the tuition fee to study a BSc in Computer Science with Foundation Year at Canterbury Christ Church University is £15,500. Do note that tuition fees for all courses are payable on an annual basis, except where stated.

Scholarships

As an international student at CCCU, you're eligible for some scholarships and bursaries. For example, the International Student Scholarship awards a £1,500 fee reduction in tuition for each year of study. This scholarship is available to all international students studying full-time and paying the standard international tuition fee. A separate application is not needed for this scholarship.
