Life in Malta

If you're a non-EU student on an approved higher education programme in Malta, you'll need a national long-stay student visa and a residence permit. To qualify, you’ll need an offer from a recognised university, proof of funds, accommodation arrangements, and the required supporting documents.

While studying, you’re allowed to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week, provided you meet the relevant requirements and obtain the necessary employment authorisation. Students on recognised higher education programmes can access these work opportunities while maintaining full-time student status. Working part-time can help you gain practical experience, improve your professional skills, and earn additional income to support your daily expenses.

After graduation, Malta offers international students the opportunity to remain in the country through the Post-Study Residence Permit. With this permit, you can stay in Malta for up to 9 months after completing your studies while searching for employment or exploring business opportunities.

To be eligible, you’ll need to complete a recognised higher education programme in Malta, hold valid health insurance, have sufficient financial means to support yourself during your stay, and apply before your student residence permit expires. During this period, you can also actively seek employment and attend interviews. If you secure a qualifying job offer, you may then transition to an appropriate work permit, such as the Single Permit, allowing you to live and work in Malta long-term.

This post-study pathway provides valuable time to gain a foothold in Malta’s job market and make a smoother transition from student life to a professional career.

Scholarships in Malta

Malta does not have a known government-funded scholarship programme equivalent to DAAD in Germany or Türkiye Bursları in Türkiye available across all international student markets. However, several universities and institutions in Malta offer their own scholarships, tuition discounts, merit awards, and financial assistance schemes for eligible international students.

University of Malta Scholarships

The University of Malta periodically offers tuition fee waivers and scholarship opportunities for selected international postgraduate students. Eligibility often depends on academic excellence, programme of study, nationality requirements, and faculty-specific criteria

Institutional Merit Scholarships

Many private higher education institutions provide scholarships for high-performing international students. These may cover partial tuition fee reductions, merit-based awards, academic excellence scholarships, and early application discounts

Because scholarship opportunities can change from year to year, you should always check the latest availability during the application process.

Our advisors at AHZ are available to help you identify scholarship opportunities that match your academic profile and study goals.
