BSc Nursing - Learning Disability
Course overview
The BSc Nursing - Learning Disability at Birmingham City University is designed to prepare students who seek to provide care for individuals with learning disabilities in health, community and social care settings. It equips them with skills and knowledge to become empathetic nurses capable of leading compassionate, evidence-based, person- and family-centred care within interdisciplinary teams.
Learning areas covered include theoretical and practical knowledge for person- and family-centred care, professional values, and self-leadership. The curriculum also focuses on evidence-based complex care, research, team leadership, and coordinating care for individuals with learning disabilities.
The teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, group work, workshops and skills labs; assessment is by coursework, exams, reflective portfolios and in-practice evaluations. Practical elements include placements across hospitals, communities and supported-living settings. The students are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as learning disability nurses upon successful completion.
