FdSc Coaching: Sport and Fitness

Wrexham University

Course overview

The Foundation Degree in Coaching: Sport and Fitness (FdSc) at Wrexham University is designed to combine theory and practical learning in a way that prepares students for work in coaching and sport-fitness environments. Over the two years, students will study core topics such as strength and conditioning, performance analysis, coaching methodology, physiology, psychology and outdoor pursuits. They will also have access to real-world partnerships, take as with Widnes Vikings Rugby League Club, Football Association of Wales, and local fitness businesses, all to enhance their learning with applied experience.

Assessment takes place through a combination of essays, reports, practical coaching sessions, presentations and case studies, all for the purpose of evaluating both theoretical understanding and applied skills. During the course of study, students can also earn industry-recognised certificates such as those for a Gym Instructor, Personal Trainer, or Exercise Referral. These are offered at a discounted rate for students in the programme. The programme includes field trips outside the campus, access to a human performance laboratory, and specialised facilities for coaching and strength & conditioning.
