BSc Sport and Exercise Science with foundation year

University of Surrey

Course overview

The BSc Sport and Exercise Science with Foundation Year course taught at the University of Surrey is a four-year programme. The foundation year helps students who do not meet entry requirements by teaching the basics in science, study skills, and mathematics. After completing the foundation year, students move into the main three-year degree, exploring how the human body functions, preventing injury, and promoting health.

This course is recognised by BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences), which enhances its professional value. The foundation year covers biology, chemistry, mathematics, academic skills, and introductory topics that prepare students for degree-level study. This pathway offers an entry route for students who don’t meet direct admission requirements.

In the main degree, modules include anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, movement science, and fitness testing. Students can also complete recognised gym instructor and personal training qualifications at no extra cost. Teaching methods include lectures, lab work, workshops, tutorials, and practical sessions using Surrey’s advanced sports and performance facilities. Assessments include exams, coursework, lab reports, presentations, and a final-year research project.
