Course overview

The BSc Microbiology with a foundation year at the University of Surrey teaches students based on life sciences, evolutionary genetics, cell biology, chemistry, mathematics, ecology, and human impact, along with academic skills. Students learn through lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, fieldwork, and workshops to prepare them well for undergraduate study.

In the subsequent three years, after the foundation year, students move into the full BSc Microbiology programme and take core modules such as microbiology, immunology, virology, microbial genetics, and optional modules in food microbiology, epidemiology. Students are assessed through exams, coursework, lab reports, presentations, and possibly a final project, with a placement year also available.

Grade Requirements:

Applicants need to have A-level grades of CCC or equivalent, including at least one science subject such as Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. Equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Extended Diploma (MMM), Access to Higher Education Diploma with relevant science units, or international equivalents are also accepted.

English Proficiency:

Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency with an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in each other section. Equivalent English qualifications, like SELT, are also accepted.
