BSc Microbiology

University of Surrey

Course overview

The BSc Microbiology at the University of Surrey teaches students about microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. The course explores how microbes cause disease, their use in industry (like food and drugs), and how they live in environments. Students are taught lab techniques, molecular biology, immunology, microbial genetics, and epidemiology.

In Year 1, students study basic biology, cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology foundations, and acquire lab skills. In Year 2, modules include Cellular Microbiology, Virology, Food Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology. In Year 3, the final year, students take advanced topics such as microbial products, epidemiology of infectious diseases, gene expression, clinical microbiology and carry out a research project.

Teaching is through lectures, seminars, labs, tutorials, group work and practical sessions. The labs are important, as students will conduct hands-on experiments in microbiology, molecular techniques, microbial culture, and microscopy, among other areas. Assessments include examinations, written coursework, lab reports, presentations, and the final-year research project.
