PhD Community Care

University of Kent

Course overview

The PhD Community Care at the University of Kent is offered through the renowned Tizard Centre, which is part of the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR). This doctoral programme emphasises high‑quality, original research into community care, intellectual disability, social inequalities, and the well‑being of people with learning disabilities. The programme is designed for both full‑time and part‑time researchers. Full‑time students typically complete the PhD in three years.

The support from the Kent Graduate and Researcher College further strengthens the experience, offering tailored training and research development. Learning is rooted in rigorous, independent research. PhD candidates design, conduct, and present a substantial doctoral thesis, guided by supervisors from the Tizard Centre. There is less emphasis on taught modules; instead, most training comes through researcher development workshops and seminars provided by Kent’s Graduate School. Assessment centres on the final PhD thesis, which must demonstrate original contribution to the field of community care or intellectual disability. Researchers are expected to develop advanced research methods, theoretical insight, and the capacity to reflect critically on policy and practice.

Entry requirements

Prospective doctoral researchers are advised to contact potential supervisors at the Tizard Centre before applying to discuss research ideas, ensure alignment of expertise, and confirm supervision.
