Computer Science - MSc by Research
Course overview
The Computer Science - MSc by Research at the University of Kent is designed to give students a solid understanding of advanced research methods and practical skills needed to carry out independent research in computer science. During this course, students will learn how to investigate complex computing problems and contribute original knowledge to the field.
As a research-focused programme, the MSc by Research in Computer Science covers key areas of computing through supervised research rather than taught modules. Through this, students become skilled in research design, critical analysis, and academic writing within computer science. As a hands-on research programme, it involves a close one-to-one supervision system with experienced academics.
Teaching and learning for this course is delivered by a team of expert researchers through regular supervision meetings, seminars, and workshops. Assessment is based primarily on a research thesis and an oral examination. Notably, the University of Kent has strong links to industry and research organisations, and as such, graduates of the Computer Science – MSc by Research find it easier to progress into doctoral study or secure research-focused roles in industry.
