MSc by Thesis Engineering research degrees

University of Hull

Course overview

The MSc by Thesis in Engineering at the University of Hull is a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) research master’s programme where you focus deeply on a self-selected engineering topic. Instead of formal coursework, you spend most of your time working closely with a supervisor to develop and complete your research project.

Assessment is centred on a substantial thesis, which you will write after your research phase. For full-time students, the writing-up phase typically lasts up to 12 months, while part-time students may require a longer duration. Additional support is available through the PGR (Postgraduate Research) Development Programme, which helps you develop key researcher skills beyond your specific project.

Entry requirements

Candidates should submit a personal statement outlining their motivation for the research, along with a reference from an academic or employer. There is also the option to upload a CV to highlight relevant research or professional experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants are normally expected to hold at least a 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in engineering or a related discipline.
  • If your degree is from a different field, a strong research proposal and relevant experience may help your application.

  • For international students whose first language is not English, the University of Hull requires IELTS 6.5 (overall), with no less than 6.0 in each component for entry.
