MSc Medical Microbiology with Advanced Research

The MSc Medical Microbiology with Advanced Research at the University of Hertfordshire is a research-intensive master’s degree designed to provide students with both strong academic knowledge and extensive practical laboratory work. Over two years (full-time), students will study advanced modules including Genetics & Protein Biology, Contemporary Topics in Medical Microbiology, Genome Science, Molecular Cell Biology & Immunology, Research Methods, a Research Internship, and an Extended Research Project. The curriculum emphasises current challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, disease pathogenesis, diagnostics, and next-generation sequencing techniques.

Teaching is delivered by leading researchers and industry experts, and includes hands-on lab work in facilities for QPCR, cell culture, and mass spectrometry. The students are assessed through a blend of coursework, practicals, and a research thesis, with an optional sandwich year (placement) available, allowing students to gain work experience if they choose. The programme is, subject to validation, accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.
