BEng Mechatronics Intelligent Machines with Foundation Year

University of Lancashire

Course overview

The BEng Mechatronics and Intelligent Machines (with Foundation Year) at the University of  Lancashire is a four-year undergraduate degree at the University of  Lancashire (ULan). The foundation entry route is designed for students who do not yet meet standard entry requirements. It provides the stepping stone into the honours degree. Students learn how intelligent machines are made, how sensors work, how control systems drive motors and how software interacts with hardware. The aim is to prepare graduates for modern engineering roles in automation, robotics, intelligent systems and smart industry.

This course is taught on the Preston campus. In year one (foundation year), students cover basic mathematics, physics, computing, engineering drawing and introduction to mechatronics. In years two to four, students study modules such as sensors and actuators, embedded systems, control theory, robotics and intelligent machines. The programme uses ULan’s engineering labs and the Engineering Innovation Centre. Learning methods include lectures, workshops, labs, tutorials, group work and project work. Students spend time building prototypes, writing control code and testing systems. Assessment is done through exams, lab reports, design assignments, programming tasks and the final honours project.
