BEng Mechatronics Intelligent Machines

University of Lancashire

Course overview

The BEng Mechatronics and Intelligent Machines at the University of Lancashire is a 3-year undergraduate degree. Students learn to design and build smart machines that combine mechanics, electronics and software. The course covers sensors, control systems and robotics. Graduates will be able to design, build and maintain intelligent equipment for industries like automation, robotics and manufacturing. The programme utilises ULan’s Engineering Innovation Centre, labs, prototype workshops, and Intelligent Machines Laboratory.

This course is offered full-time at the Preston campus. It lasts three years. There is a sandwich (work placement) option between year two and year three. In the early years, students build foundations in mathematics, mechanics, electronics, and programming. Later years cover modules such as control theory, robotics, intelligent machines, mechatronic system design and a final honours project.

Students are taught using lectures, lab sessions, workshops and hands-on projects. They code control systems, build prototypes, test circuits and integrate sensors. Assessment is carried out through exams, coursework, lab reports, design tasks, programming assessments and a final project. Some modules involve group work and presentations. Feedback helps students improve both practical and theoretical skills.
