BSc Clinical Technology
Course overview
The BSc Clinical Technology at the University of Bradford trains students to work at the junction of medicine, engineering and technology. The course teaches how to design, build, repair, and maintain medical devices, and how to use biomedical equipment in diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. It also covers tissue engineering and wound repair for artificial organs, and medical technology/engineering relevant to modern healthcare. Students study topics like imaging, instrumentation, anatomy, electronics, prosthetics, renal technology (dialysis), rehabilitation engineering (prosthetics/orthotics), physiology, and device design and testing. The course is offered as a 3-year BSc (Hons) or as a 4-year “sandwich” BSc (Hons) with a placement (industry) year.
The degree is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and recognised by the UK Engineering Council as giving a partial path toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (with further learning). In the final year students take an Individual Research Project on Medical Ethics and Quality Management, Integrated Design or Rehabilitation and Prosthetics. Optional modules include Biomaterials with Implant Design and Technology, and Renal Technology. Teaching is through lectures, labs, workshops, tutorials, and practical sessions. Assessment involves lab work, projects, tests, practical exams and a final individual project. If the sandwich (4-year) path is chosen, Year 3 is a placement year in industry. Students gain real-world experience in medical and health-tech firms.
