Nottingham Trent University

Course overview

The BSc Microbiology (with foundation year) at Nottingham Trent University is a four-year full-time course. Students begin with a foundation year to build scientific skills, then move into the honours Microbiology degree. The course focuses on microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi), and how they affect health, environment, food safety and biotechnology. Laboratory work, research projects and field studies are core to the learning experience. The Microbiology programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.

The foundation year gives students grounding in bioscience, chemistry, mathematics and study methods. After passing that year, students enter the honours years studying modules in microbial physiology, immunology, molecular biology, and industrial microbiology. The honours years also include a research project and optional placement or study abroad possibilities. The programme runs on the Clifton Campus. Learning combines lectures, seminars, lab practicals, and workshops. Students carry out experiments, handle microbes in controlled labs, analyse data and report findings. Assessment includes exams, lab reports, essays, project work and the final honours research piece.
