Nottingham Trent University

BSc Computing with foundation year

Nottingham Trent University

Course overview

The BSc Computing (with foundation year) at Nottingham Trent University offers students a four-year path to a full honours degree. The first (foundation) year teaches programming, maths, basic computing systems, and software development. After the foundation year, students move into the full honours programme where they study software engineering, databases, internet technologies, networks, mobile systems, and application development. The course blends practical work and theory so students gain skills to build and manage computing systems.

This programme is delivered at the School of Science and Technology, with study on the Clifton Campus. The first year (foundation) builds the base in computing basics, mathematics, programming in Python or similar, and an introduction to computing systems. From year 2 onward, the honours years include core modules such as Software Design and Implementation, Information and Database Engineering, Internet Application Development, and Mobile Platform Development, including optional modules such as Virtual Reality, Serious Games, and Information Security. The final year may include a major project that lets students apply their skills to real problems and build a portfolio of work. Students learn through lectures, practical labs, workshops, coding sessions, group work, and self-study. Assessment methods include exams, essays, lab reports, software projects, presentations, and a major project in later years.
