MSc Language Technologies

Bangor University

Course overview

The MSc Language Technologies at Bangor University is a 1-year full-time course for students who want to understand and apply computer technology to language-related problems. It combines the study of linguistic theory and technological applications such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), automated translation, speech science, corpus analysis, and machine-based language learning. Students learn about language structure, translation practice, and machine learning.

Core modules include Introduction to Programming, Foundation of Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, Language Technologies, Translation in Practice, Research Methods, and the MSc Dissertation or Computer Science Dissertation. Optional modules may include topics such as speech science, psycholinguistics, historical linguistics, language change, and bilingualism. The course equips students with the skills to conduct independent experimental research and build solutions to real-world language technology problems.

Students also have the opportunity to work on a practical research project for their dissertation, potentially using the Supercomputing Wales high-performance computing facilities or collaborating with PhD-level researchers at Bangor’s AIMLAC Centre for Doctoral Training and the university’s own Language Technologies Unit.
