BSc Psychology with foundation year

University of Surrey

Course overview

The BSc (Hons) Psychology with a foundation year is a four-year course that is aimed at applicants who fail to satisfy the normal entry standards or those who need additional academic preparation before they commence their degree studies. The foundation year is a facilitated introduction to university life where one is equipped with the necessary academic and subject-specific skills that could help him or her to study successfully.

The programme's first year is dedicated to core modules that build a solid academic and statistical foundation for subsequent study. Upon successful completion of this year, students automatically progress onto the three-year, British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited honours degree, where they study the scientific evidence of human behaviour and mental health.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement and a relevant academic and/or employer reference. They also have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants typically need A-level grades of CCC, or 29 points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma for entry to the foundation year pathway. The university will accept international qualifications that are equivalent to A-levels.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in the Writing section and 5.5 in all other elements (Reading, Listening, Speaking), or they may submit equivalent accepted English language test scores.
